Colorectal cancer ranks as the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, trailing only lung cancer. According to projections for 2025, it will claim around 52,900 lives, with approximately 154,270 new diagnoses expected. For the average American, the lifetime risk hovers at about 1 in 24, and the trend is particularly alarming for younger generations: those born after 1990 face twice the risk of colon cancer and four times the risk of rectal cancer compared to individuals born in 1950.

That’s the bad news.

The good news is that colorectal cancer is among the most preventable forms of the cancer if it’s caught early. It typically starts as a polyp—a small growth in the colon or rectum—that can take up to 10 years to become cancerous. This long gestation window provides ample time to detect and remove it before it turns life-threatening.

When found at the localized stage, five-year survival rates exceed 90%. But once it spreads, that drops to about 15%. Unfortunately, only about one in three cases is diagnosed early today.

People are dying because we’re detecting the signals too late.

As longevity expert Dr. Peter Attia puts it: “Nobody should ever die from colon cancer.” He illustrates with a thought experiment: If you had a colonoscopy every day, you’d never develop colon cancer—you’d spot and remove the polyp first.

Daily colonoscopies aren’t realistic. They’re invasive and disruptive. But what if you could screen regularly, passively, without added effort?

Consider colorectal cancer like a house fire. In 2023, the U.S. saw about 344,600 residential fires, leading to 2,890 deaths—a fatality rate of roughly 1 in 119.

Compare that to colorectal cancer: 154,270 new cases projected for 2025, with 52,900 deaths—that’s 1 death per 3 diagnoses.

Fire deaths have dropped dramatically thanks to smoke detectors in every home. They alert early, before flames spread.

For colon cancer, though, two-thirds of cases are found only after spreading—like discovering a fire when it’s already raging.

At Throne, we see every bathroom as a potential frontline defense, like a smoke detector for your gut.

A Challenge for Millions: Color Vision Deficiency

Early signs can be even harder to spot for some. About 13 million Americans have color vision deficiency (colorblindness), affecting 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women.

Many with colorblindness can’t easily see red hues, like blood in stool or urine – a key indicator for conditions such as colorectal cancer, ulcerative colitis, or bladder issues.

Throne aims to empower those millions who might otherwise overlook a vital warning sign.

Our vision is bold but simple: a world where colorectal cancer isn’t the second deadliest cancer in the world – it isn’t even in the top twenty.
