What color should healthy urine be?

Normal urine commonly falls between nearly colorless and yellow, with pale yellow often used as a practical hydration target. The yellow comes from a pigment called urobilin, also known as urochrome, and its intensity changes with concentration. Clear urine can follow a lot of fluid, while darker yellow generally means the urine is more concentrated. That's part of what your pee can tell you day to day.

Color makes a handy hydration clue, but not a precise test. A systematic review found real associations between urine color and lab measures of concentration, though the strength varied and the link was weaker in older adults. So completely clear urine isn't automatically "perfect," and not every dark shade means dehydration. The hydration read really only applies across the clear-to-amber range. Orange, red, brown, green, and the rest are different questions with different answers, which is what the chart below is for.

Read the chart as a starting point, not a diagnosis. A shade tells you which question to ask next, and the same color can be benign one day and worth a call another, depending on what comes with it.

Color also isn't a single scale that slides from healthy into disease. Pale yellow to amber works as a rough concentration gradient, but red, green, and brown are separate categories with their own causes, not "more dehydrated" positions on that scale.

What about purple or black urine?

These are rare and highly context-dependent, which is why they aren't on the general chart. Purple almost always shows up as purple urine bag syndrome, where a catheter's tubing or drainage bag turns purple in someone with a long-term catheter and a urinary infection, rather than free urine turning purple in an otherwise healthy person.

Urine that genuinely looks black is rare and has its own separate causes, from certain medications to uncommon metabolic conditions, and it deserves medical assessment rather than interpretation from a color chart.

Color, cloudiness, and foam are three different things

Color is the hue. Cloudiness is suspended material that makes the urine harder to see through. Foam is bubbles on the surface. A lab actually records color and clarity separately. 

Persistent or repeatedly heavy foam can occur with protein in the urine, but bubbles can also come from stream force, toilet water, or cleaning products, and only a urine test can tell whether protein is actually present.

How to read an unexpected color

When a color surprises you, work through it in order.

Check what you recently consumed. Foods, dyes, vitamins, and medications produce a lot of vivid changes. Beets and berries can turn urine pink or red, B vitamins can make it neon, and various medications shift it orange, brown, or greenish. If a medication is the likely cause, check the label or ask a pharmacist rather than stopping a prescription on your own.

Check whether it's truly the urine. Toilet cleaner, lighting, menstrual blood, or vaginal discharge can change what you see in the bowl without the urine itself being unusual.

See whether it happens again. A one-time change right after beets or a new supplement is very different from an unexplained color that keeps returning.

Look at what comes with it. Pay attention to pain or burning, urgency or frequent urination, fever or chills, back or side pain, yellow skin or eyes, pale stool, severe muscle pain or weakness, reduced urine output, and any blood or clots. Those companions matter far more than the shade itself.

Use testing when appearance can't answer the question. A urinalysis can check for blood, protein, and signs of infection, and blood tests can be added when a kidney, liver, or metabolic issue is a concern. Looking at the bowl can't do any of that.

What urine color can't tell you

Color alone can't reliably tell you whether your kidneys are healthy, whether you have a UTI, whether red pigment is actually blood, whether brown is bilirubin or blood or muscle pigment, exactly how dehydrated you are, or whether a medication should be stopped. A color chart is a sorting tool, not a home urinalysis.

Two cautions are worth stating plainly. Visible blood can make urine pink, red, or brown, is often painless, and can't be told apart from food pigment by looking, so unexplained red or brown urine deserves evaluation even when nothing hurts. And in older adults, urine color should not be used on its own to diagnose or rule out dehydration; a light shade doesn't prove someone is adequately hydrated.

When to see a doctor

Contact a clinician promptly for unexplained pink, red, or smoky-brown urine, even if it's painless; orange or dark urine with pale stool or yellow skin or eyes; or a color change that keeps returning with no clear explanation.

Seek urgent care for blood clots, especially with trouble urinating; brown or cola-colored urine with severe muscle pain, weakness, or reduced urine output; or any unusual color alongside severe pain, high fever, repeated vomiting, confusion, or a major drop in how much you're urinating.
